Jowhar, Hir-Shabelle State – October 22, 2025 In an effort to enhance civic engagement and promote social inclusion, particularly among discrimination groups, the Somali Envornmental & Community Development Organization (SECDO), in partnership with the United Nations Transitional Assistance Mission in Somalia (UNTAMS), successfully conducted a two-day Community Empowerment and Human Rights Awareness Training in Jowhar, the capital of Hir-Shabelle State.

The training aimed to strengthen the capacity of community members to understand and advocate for their fundamental rights, equality, and participation in social and civic life. A total of 25 participants—including persons with disabilities, teachers, traditional elders, representatives of internally displaced persons (IDPs), and members of independent media organizations—took part in the workshop.

Throughout the two-day session, participants engaged in interactive discussions and learning modules focused on:
• Fundamental human rights and equality principles
• The rights and responsibilities of every citizen
• The importance of inclusion and non-discrimination in community development

Facilitators emphasized that no individual should be judged, excluded, based on clan, gender, disability, or any natural differences. Instead, all citizens should be respected equally and given opportunities to contribute to the growth and stability of society.

In her closing remarks, the SECDO representative highlighted the significance of collaborative community action in promoting justice, equality, and peace. Participants expressed their commitment to share the knowledge and awareness gained during the training with their communities, helping to foster a culture of mutual respect and inclusion.

The collaboration between SECDO and UNTAMS demonstrates a shared commitment to advancing human rights, equality, and community resilience in Somalia. SECDO and UNTAMS reaffirmed their dedication to continue supporting groups through capacity-building, awareness campaigns, and advocacy programs aimed at combating discrimination and promoting inclusive governance.
While meaningful progress has been made, discrimination communities in Jowhar and across Somalia still face challenges related to discrimination, stigmatization, and social exclusion. SECDO emphasizes the need for continued awareness initiatives and community dialogues to promote tolerance, equality, and the protection of human dignity for all.
