Jowhar, Hirshabelle State — July 21–22, 2024 — The Somali Environmental Community Development Organisation (SECDO), in partnership with the United Nations Assistance Mission in Somalia (UNSOM), successfully conducted a two-day human rights monitoring training in Jowhar town. The training was designed to strengthen local capacity for monitoring and reporting on human rights issues.

A total of 35 participants attended the training, representing a broad cross-section of the community. Attendees included traditional elders, internally displaced persons (IDPs), schoolteachers, male and female youth, and representatives from local health centers, universities, youth, and women’s organizations. Journalists from various media outlets in Jowhar also participated, ensuring wider dissemination of human rights information.

The training focused on practical skills in human rights monitoring, documentation, and reporting, with a special emphasis on inclusive participation and protection of vulnerable groups. Participants gained knowledge on identifying human rights violations, engaging communities, and promoting accountability within both public and private sectors.

This initiative also aimed to enhance community engagement and foster a shared understanding of the importance of upholding human rights principles across Somalia.

Through this training, SECDO and UNSOM reaffirm their commitment to supporting grassroots efforts that advance peace, justice, and accountability, contributing to a stronger culture of human rights in the country.
